10-Member Committee To Declare J&K’s Dal Lake As An Eco-Sensitive Zone newdelhitimes.com
In regard with concerns over shrinking size of the Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake, the Jammu and Kashmir government has set up a ten-member committee to declare Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake and areas surrounding it as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). As per an assessment done by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) in 2017, the Dal Lake has shrunk from its original area of 22 square kilometres to 10 square kilometres. Pollution and encroachments are the major reasons that have resulted in the shrinkage of the Lake.
Additional Secretary of General Administrative Department (GAD) Subash Chibber said, “Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a 10-member committee to finalize the draft of the notification for declaring Dal Lake and its surrounding areas as eco-sensitive zone”. The Committee comprising Vice-Chairman of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, Chief Conservator for Forests, Director of the Tourism Department, Kashmir’s Regional Wildlife Warden, Regional Director of the State Pollution Control Board, Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Director of Industries Department, Director of the Agriculture Department, the Chief Town Planner and a representative of the Law Department shall finalize the draft notification within a month.
